President’s Report
This has
been a very difficult year for some of the members of the Club and their
families.
Our
sympathy extends to Godfrey Somers, who lost the love of his life and our
great friend Edna on 17th September last year. The Club presented
a memorial PHF to Godfrey in Edna’s name.
Merv
Ericson, Graham & Lesley Shaw, Jeff Mills, John Hocking, Jan Smith and I had
serious health issues to confront, but thankfully it seems all the issues
are under control or overcome.
I am sure
all members affected found, as I did, that such issues tend to concentrate
ones focus away from Rotary matters.
It is
important to care for each other in these circumstances.
Membership Recognition
I would
especially congratulate those members who have received Paul Harris
Fellowship recognition in the past year for their service to Rotary. Tom has
set out full details in his report.
Report
Trying to
present a condensed version of our past Rotary Year is not easy. No one
wants a boring collation of Rotary acronyms and statistics, but it’s pretty
hard to avoid them.
We
very nearly achieved our committed RI targets.
Foundation
Donation of A$2860 (US$2600) vs target of US$2100
Polio
Challenge
Donation of A$1200 (US$1090) vs target of US$1000
Membership: -
We fell one short in our
promised membership target (net 2 increase), Tara Cameron joined us late
last year, and consequently we achieved the RI target of +1 from July 1 2009
at 31 March 2010. Unfortunately then Richard Jarrett retired and returned to
Adelaide in early April. Chris & Shirley Harris resigned at year end.
Obviously as Membership Director next year I have a clear remit to find
further enthusiastic members.
Community
Anzac Day
Commemoration:-
This
successful event was held on Tuesday 20 April with 43 schools and 850
students and staff participating
This is
a genuine Community involvement of Rotary, Council, RAN Band (HMAS
Cerberus), Army School of Signals – Cataflaque Party, the Waverley RSL Sub
Branch and not the least Crown Coaches.
Also we
had excellent local press coverage.
This
project ticks many of Rotary’s project boxes.
ARH
We made
a donation of $1120, including $500 recognising Gonny Rundell’s achievement
in the Ride for Research.
Rural
Relief
$1500 in
cash and kind was donated to support the rural community around Nathalia in
conjunction with the Nathalia CWA.
$5000
was transferred to the ARAS Trust to provide two scholarships to assist
agricultural students at the Longeronong College. There was a strong field
of 16 applicants.
Probus
Graham
Shaw and a small committee formed the Combined Probus Club of Notting Hill
in the City of Monash. The Club was inaugurated on 31 March 2010 with 23
members. It now has reached its membership target of 80 and has a waiting
list. There is a strong leadership group and its plans are formulated out to
the end of 2010. The membership has many useful life experiences and skills
to provide service to the Club.
Tara
presented the Accreditation Certificate on 6th July on behalf of
the Rotary Club.
Mayor
of Monash Charity Golf Day
Our Club
again participated in a successful Mayor of Monash Charity Golf Day of which
our share of the proceeds was $2000. This was donated to the Cerebral Palsy
Education Centre to purchase pressure suits to assist young Cerebral Palsy
patients restore some muscular & skeletal strength.
Vocational
RYLA
The Club
arranged to send Voung Cheng to RYLA
Monday 5th
July 2010 to Saturday 10th July 2010
at Lake Dewar Lodge, Myrniong. Voung is
a Science Student Ambassador who is doing Science-Law at Monash University.
Unfortunately he withdrew because of ill health.
Pride
of Workmanship Awards
For my money
this small award ($54) got the biggest “bang for the buck” of the year.
After our
visit to Waverley Industries we decided to make an award to the most
outstanding “disadvantaged” employee as selected by the management.
The award was
presented by PE Andrea and she informs that the Awardee was ecstatic.
We intend to
continue this award to them.
International
Service
ROMAC
In the first
half of the year the Club along with a number of other Rotarians, their
families and community groups supported Joyce & her mother Lucia during
Joyce’s treatment for burns she received when her grass skirt caught fire on
a remote PNG
island. Joyce left here on 4th December a very lively girl, which
is amazing compared to her status when she arrived. Special thanks must be
paid to all those who assisted during Joyce’s stay. Sandra, Tom, John & Judy
and Jan & John from our Club and Graeme Smith (ROMAC Chair) and his family.
Jo Seeley (Graeme’s daughter) put in a sterling effort in supporting Lucia
during her time here and while there were undoubtedly many others who
helped, she and her daughters, Gem & Em, deserve our warmest thanks.
Joyce and
Lucia returned in May – June so Joyce could have a check-up. They were both
well.
At the end
of June we made a $1000 donation to ROMAC, which gives the club one of three
chances to win a Peppers Resort Holliday Package.
ShelterBox
We made one
donation of $1200 to the ShelterBox programme and were considering another
when the discord in relations between SBUK and SBA became apparent. I know
this matter is one that has tested DG David for the last part of the year.
RC
Endeavour Hills has reformed their project as Disaster Aid Australia.
Canadian & US Rotary based entities have formed Diaster Aid Canada and
Disaster Aid US. The three entities will cooperate in stationing locally
sourced “boxes” to respond to events.
District
9810 has to resolve how to interface with either SBUK or the DA “franchise”
before we can promote either of them.
Foundation
Water Projects
We were
finally able to sign off on the rainfall catchment and storage project at
the orphanage in India.
Right at years
end we have submitted a project to provide a water-well at the Elementary
School, Kumili, Chennai, Tamil Nadu in India. The cost of this project is
US$8370. This project will be in conjunction with Rotary Club of Madras
Besantnagar, with whom we conducted the prior project.
Because of
funding changes procedures we may not be able to get RI matching grants.
New
Generations
MUNA
We sponsored a
team from Wesley Grammar (GW) comprising Nick Silagy and Byron Tabet, at
MUNA in Parliament House 1-2 May 2010. They represented China and were
judged the winners. They are now off to Canberra for the National finals
from 13th to 15th August 2010 at Old Parliament House.
They are two
impressive young men and we wish them well.
To fit in with
School programmes the Perpetual Trophy will be presented on 14th October 2010
at 11:30 AM
Camp Awakening
We funded two
students to Camp Awakening from 8-10 May 2010.
Fundraising
Obviously all
this is not possible without the capacity to raise the necessary funds.
Photographic
Course
Obviously this
remains our major source of funding and Malcolm Brownlee gave a presentation
at the change-over dinner on future focus.
Other sources
Tom discusses
other sources of fundraising in his report attached.
About 33% of
our funding comes from other than the Photographic Course and we need to
expand that.
One
opportunity that has presented itself is the potential for a Market at the
Monash University. The committee comprising Tom, Ian & Zeki are working on a
proposal for your consideration. This, if it is to proceed, will need a full
Club commitment.
Social
Interaction
This year
there have been 13 club functions & social events as well as a number of
Joint Club, Cluster & District functions were available for member’s and
their partners to enjoy Rotary fellowship.
Some Thank You’s
No one can
achieve anything without a good team.
I would
like to thank the Board for their continuing support and hard work, and all
the members who have served on committees.
I would
especially thank Carole who has assisted me when required and has put up
with the interruptions to her life that being a President of a Rotary Club
requires.

-
Contribution to Polio Plus $ 1200
-
We were pleased to join the Cluster and especially RC
Wheelers Hill in their Vocation Day and Dinner to welcome and host the
Group Study Exchange team from Turkey. The
Club assisted with arranging the visit to the Police Academy.
-
At years end RC Monash had submitted a Matching Grant
application as Sponsor Club to assist our long term partners RC Madras
Besant Nagar in Chennai to build a water bore at the Kuhmizi
School in Tamil Nadu. This is one of the schools in the area that our
partner supports and the immediate need is for a water supply for drinking
and also to flush the school toilet block. This project is line with
Rotary International’s worldwide program to improve the health and life
expectancy of children and communities by enhancing potable water and
hygiene.
-
Paul Harris Awards were given to members for their
outstanding service, including a number who had tirelessly served the Club
since its inception and for which recognition was well overdue
Included were
-
Richard Jarrett
who was leaving the club but not Rotary to retire to Adelaide. Richard
has been a great Rotary member in several cities and made a sound
contribution to our Club through his wisdom knowledge and work
-
Peter Matthews for his long standing role as sergeant,
and for the great support he has given to local school and community
programs with goods in kind over the years
-
Fred Pearce
and Andrea Olssen for their work leading up to and during their
presidential years
-
The late Edna Somers who always provided great support
to the Club and to the work of her life partner and Club member Godfrey.
We miss her.
-
Graham Shaw, a sapphire, a man who has inspired and
energised the club, when fit, and doubly so after a major motor vehicle
accident 18 months ago left him on a long road of rehabilitation to
regain fitness. Through that he has continued to do Rotary work
including the masterminding and formation of the Probus Club in the
latter part of the year.
-
Malcolm Brownlee
who was awarded a double sapphire for his outstanding work in
fundraising and providing a community service through setting up and
running the Photographic Courses and the Friends of Rotary Camera Club
over the past six years. Substantial moneys have been raised by this
activity for both RC Monash and RC Nunawading and many people have
gained a lot of pleasure and knowledge in advancing their capability and
skill in photography, by attending the courses
-
A presentation of the RI Video, The Last Inch was given
to the Club by Tom Flintoff,
a moving and informative account of how the Polio Plus program is being
delivered in South Asia.
FUNDRAISING
The major
fundraiser for the year was again the Photography Course. Malcolm Brownlee
and the Friends of Rotary Camera Club do the bulk of the work assisted by RC
Nunawading and RC Monash. This is a mighty effort and this year 8 courses
were held. The Club benefited $12600 from this commitment.
Funds were
also collected from
-
sales of Christmas cakes puddings and biscuits,
organised by Les Marton
-
sales of Entertainment books organised by Tom Flintoff

Foundation and Fundraising Chair
Membership
Report 2009-10
Meetings
Our Club
held 50 weekly meetings this year of which 42 were at breakfast and 8 were
evening partners meetings. 30 great Guest Speakers delivered presentations
of various subjects of interest. Additionally, the outing to the pinewood
theatre with dinner afterwards was a great social occasion.
Membership
attendances at meetings varied week to week from 50% to approx 80%
attendance, however significant makeup’s covered the difference. The
district web site shows the Club weekly attendance relative to other Clubs.
Membership
Recruitment
We have
managed to maintain our membership at 21. During the year we saw Tara
Cameron join the Club and Richard Jarrett resign to retire back in Adelaide.
Following
the work done by the membership team last year and the recommendations from
this year’s team, the Board wrestled with the knowledge that although the
joint Photographic course project indicated significant opportunities for
the recruitment of members through its feedback system, no results were
crystallised.
In August
09 the Board deliberated on ways to increase membership and accepted the
recommendation of the Membership committee to implement the ‘Beyond 2000’
membership recruitment program. This program had been developed at the
Canberra Membership Conference in July 2008. To support this program, we saw
the development of a new smart looking Club Brochure and the introduction of
an upmarket model badge for members & partners. Both the Membership Chair &
President also attended District membership training on 13th
November 09 at the Monash Business Centre to hone skills.
Through the
‘Beyond 2000’ program we identified potential members and with further work
by the committee we saw Tara Cameron join our Club.
As you know
membership recruitment is the future life blood of our Club, therefore to
make a real difference going forward, we need more members to become
involved in the process and support the management team in 2010/11.
